Road Safety
The Children's Traffic Club provides road safety professionals with an effective and proven mechanism to deliver road safety education to pre-school children. Although, children are most vulnerable at a later stage when they start travelling independently, it is when they are very young that they can be best influenced - good habits established early can last a lifetime.
There are also significant additional benefits in reaching, indirectly, other family members like parents and siblings. In a recent survey of Traffic Club members:
- 76% said that the Club had helped them become more road safety aware
- 89% of those who had other children in the household (in addition to the member child) said the Club had helped them teach road safety to their other children.
For more details, see the Research section.
The process of becoming a 'participating' authority is quite simple and, once set up, requires little input from the Road Safety Officers. Subject to budgetary considerations, the Local Authority, or Road Safety Organisation, can offer either discounted membership to parents in their area, or make the Club totally free. The second option has been proven to achieve much higher uptakes (60% +). Additional promotional material and partnerships (Health Visitors, nurseries, playgroups, childminders, Sure Start, Early Years, etc) can ensure that the Club reaches the most vulnerable groups in an area.
How to get started
- Contact your Local Health Authority to get their agreement to participate - with their help, you'll be able to have the invitations delivered directly to the home of every 3 year old child in your area. (If for any reason this is not possible, there are alternatives available.) The Health Authority will also be able to give you a fairly accurate number of 3 year olds per year in your area - this will help with budgeting.
- Contact Us for an initial discussion to examine the options available to you and to discuss costs.
- Once there is an agreement to proceed, it will only take couple of months to start. The minimum commitment to participate in the Club is for a year.
If you are already participating
There are several things you can do to help promote and perhaps improve the uptake in your area. We have developed a Presentation Pack and a Video for all professionals for helping and encouraging parents/carers to enrol children in the Club. We also have a range of Promotional Material and resources to help you. Here is a small selection of ideas:
- Organise presentations to different audiences - parents, nursery teachers/playgroup leaders, health visitors, etc.
- Use data from our monthly uptake reports to establish which areas in your authority have low uptake - then, you can organise special local events and promotions.
- Contact your local libraries and organise special 'Children's Traffic Club' days - reading stories, doing activities, giving attending children a small promotional gift.
- Use your local press to run ads, competitions, Children's Traffic Club news.
- We will notify you if any child from your area has won a member's competition. Use the opportunity for some PR - arrange presentation of prize with local dignitary, press coverage, etc (always after obtaining permission from the parents or carers).
- Give Children's Traffic Club resources to nurseries and playgroups in your area; enlist their support in registering any qualifying child that is not already a member.
- Place Children's Traffic Club posters in suitable places i.e. doctors and dentists' surgeries, libraries, hospitals, health centres, sport centres, shopping centres etc.
