How it WorksThe Children's Traffic Club operates in the UK, in partnership with Local and Health Authorities who wish to make the Club available to the parents of 3 year olds in their areas. We refer to these authorities as 'participating'.In participating areas, parents of 3 year old children are invited to register their child with the Club. The most effective method to reach all families with 3 year olds within an area is in partnership with the Local Health Authority / Primary Care Trust (PCT). We arrange for them to send out the invitations directly to the parent, so that nobody else gains access to the child's/families personal details. All that parents have to do to register, is fill in a Registration Form and post it to The Children's Traffic Club. No stamp is needed. The cost of membership is usually paid for by the Local Authorities or Road Safety Organisations (see The Cost). It has been found that when parents are asked to pay, the uptake is lower than with free-to-parents schemes, where the uptake averages 60%. Free memberships also ensure that children in low income families are not disadvantaged. When children become members, they receive a series of six books through the post - one every three months - together with stickers, competitions and the child's membership certificate (see The Six Books). A range of additional resources are available to use in group situations – both as stand-alone items and to reinforce road safety teaching in the home. Also, a range of promotional and support items are available (see Promotional & Support Material). The Children's Traffic Club provides participating authorities with monthly reports on uptake, broken down by postcode sector. Participating authorities also receive generous discounts on any additional resources or support material they need, including help with launches and PR. |
