"I would like to thank everyone who took part in producing all those books for the younger children, it can sometimes be hard to get younger children to sit and learn anything, let alone topics like road safety. My son is 4 and he has shown an interest, has taken all information in, and also remembers it when we are out and about."
(Parent from Dumfries, Scotland)
"Repetition is very successful with young children and variety is important to sustain adult interest. I think you have managed this."
(Parent from Carmarthenshire, Wales)
"There are certain things in the book you would not think of straight away to teach your child. So with the books it makes you aware, which helps you make your child aware about everything on the roads. We have thoroughly enjoyed every book."
(Parent from Kent, England)
"3 months is too long from one book to the other for a child's short memory."
(Parent from Cardiff, Wales)
Reply from The Children's Traffic Club: "The gap used to be 6 months when the Club started. We will re-look at this issue in a few years' time. In our recent members' survey, 75% of parents had found the gap between each book 'just right'. But we will look again at this when we update material in the future."
"My son loved the stickers and couldn't wait to go through the activities so that he could stick the stickers in. This worked really well. Thanks."
(Parent from Croydon, London)
Reply from The Children's Traffic Club: "Stickers have proved to be a huge success. In our recent members' survey, 99% of parents said that their child really loved the stickers in the books. Well done for managing to keep using the stickers as a reward - some parents have reported having difficulties keeping the stickers away from busy little fingers!"
"A great idea, made road safety fun. When characters had accidents I could encourage my children to relate by using characters as a reference i.e. 'Remember what happened to Daniel'."
(Parent from Sefton, England)
Reply from The Children's Traffic Club: "This is exactly how the stories should be used, well done! We have tried not to scare children with too many 'accidents' but some reference was needed to make them realise what could happen. Also, as young children have no concept of 'death', we have emphasized how 'it hurts'. This is something all children can relate to. 'Missing a treat' is also a good way to explain consequences."
"Thank you. My child has definitely benefited from the books you send out, and now doesn't let me cross the road if the green man is not showing."
(Parent from Newham, London)
Reply from The Children's Traffic Club: "Well done to your child and to you for teaching him so well. Remember though, the best way for children to take road safety seriously, is to see parents doing what they tell them to do."
"The books are an excellent resource for parents. Matthew won one of the colouring competitions. He has enjoyed the tape he received as a prize. His photo was in the paper as part of the publicity campaign, he was very proud of this and the T-shirt he was given. Carry on the good work. Thank you."
(Parent from Denbighshire, Wales)
Reply from The Children's Traffic Club: "We are glad he enjoyed the publicity that your Road Safety Officer organised locally. Unfortunately, we can't show his photo here because our policy is not to publish children's photographs or details on the internet."
"I like to thank you very much for the books. They are very useful indeed. Unfortunately, my older child who was 4+ when the first book was received was not entitled to join the Club nor participate in the competitions, which she loves very much. Nevertheless, we all enjoyed the books, which is the utmost objective."
(Parent from Waltham Forest, London)
Reply from The Children's Traffic Club: "Have a look at the "Your Questions" section about older children joining the Club. Your older daughter can take part in Website Competitions which are open to all children, whether members or not."
"My child's nursery introduced the Club in his nursery, which made him very happy, as he already knew some of the characters. He also learned the song and used to ask to read the books as part of his daily fun."
(Parent from Rhondda Cynon Taff, Wales)
"My son's nursery did a Traffic Club topic so this reinforced the work we were doing on it at home."
(Parent from Lanarkshire, Scotland)
Reply from The Children's Traffic Club: "All nurseries and playgroups in Scotland receive a free Traffic Club Nursery & Playgroup Pack. It is paid by the Scottish Government and is available through local Road Safety Officers. If your child's nursery has not received their pack yet, ask them to call The Children's Traffic Club in Scotland Helpline on 0845-7325 325."
"Excellent scheme - are registered day nursery schools aware of this?"
(Parent from Redbridge, London)
Reply from The Children's Traffic Club: "Since Transport for London (TfL) made the Club available free to all 3 year olds in London, nurseries and playgroups in London are now receiving a free Traffic Club Nursery & Playgroup Pack. It is paid for by TfL and is available through local Road Safety Officers. If your child's nursery has not received their pack yet, ask them to call their local Road Safety Unit (at the Council offices) or The Children's Traffic Club on 0870-.010 4440. Many other areas also utilise the Nursery & Playgroup Pack especially in Wales and thanks to the Welsh Assembly, a Welsh version will shortly be available."
"My child has a learning problem and her speech is affected by this, so with all the bright pictures and the stickers it was fun for her."
(Parent from Tayside, Scotland)
Reply from The Children's Traffic Club: "We are very pleased to hear that your daughter enjoyed the material. Have a look at the "Fun Collection" - you may find more things suitable for her. The Song & Story tape may be particularly useful."
"My daughter really enjoyed the Traffic Club books and it helped her learn road safety more so than if I was teaching her myself. However, I do feel she would have appreciated more activities for her to do e.g. colouring in, puzzles, etc."
(Parent from Caerphilly, Wales)
Reply from The Children's Traffic Club: "The problem for us has always been how to cover all the road safety topics without over-extending the books so that parents and children are not put-off using them. There are however many additional fun items that reinforce the Club messages, in the Fun Collections ."
"Would be nice to have local practical meetings to go over the info in a group setting - to practise what is read about."
(Parent from Ayrshire & Arran, Scotland)
Reply from The Children's Traffic Club: "This is an excellent idea. Try to contact other parents who have joined the Club in your area - maybe by placing a small poster in nurseries, playgroups, libraries, doctor surgeries, etc. We cannot help you unfortunately, due to data protection. But, please let us know of how you are getting on and what difficulties or successes you have had. It will help other parents who are thinking of doing something similar."
"If possible, could The Children's Traffic Club books and parents guide have a separate booklet? Thank you for your Traffic Club books."
(Parent from Luton, Bedfordshire)
Reply from The Children's Traffic Club: "Thank you for your suggestion, but when we redesigned all Club material in 2000, this was one of the options we put to parent focus groups. The majority agreed that it's best to keep together in one book so they don't get lost. It also strengthens the bond between parent and child as they are both sharing the material."
"The last book would have been improved if a reunion of all the safety characters had been included - Sammy Seatbelt and Bee Bright were not in the last book."
(Parent from Edinburgh, Scotland)
Reply from The Children's Traffic Club: "It would have been great, but there was so much more to cover in the last book that we had difficulty fitting everything in and therefore some topics - covered thoroughly earlier - had to be missed out. We will however, keep this in mind for any future updates."
